Lodging Tips for Your Elopement

Stay Inside the Park for the Full Experience:
Imagine waking up to the first light spilling over the Blue Ridge Mountains or ending your night under a blanket of stars. Inside the park, you’ll find these
Many charming Airbnbs and cabins sit about 45 minutes or more from key spots inside the park. The drive along Skyline Drive is stunning, but its winding roads and slower speed limit mean you’ll need to plan your timeline accordingly.
Do You Need a Permit to Elope in Shenandoah?
Not every wedding needs a permit, but it’s important to check before you begin to plan.
no permit needed if:
- Your group is 15 people or fewer (this includes you two, your guests, your officiant, and your vendors).
- You aren’t bringing in any décor, arches, chairs, music, or other setup.
a permit is required if:
- You have 16 or more people.
- You want any kind of special setup even if it’s just the two of you.
Other things to know:
- Drones are not allowed anywhere in the park.
- Décor is only allowed in designated amphitheaters.
- Fall is the busiest season. In October + November, overlook ceremonies must happen before 10:00 AM on the weekends.
If you’ll need a permit, i will guide you through the process to keep it simple and stress-free.
Choosing the Best Season
Every season has its own magic, and the right one for you depends on the kind of experience you want.
Whether you’re drawn to vibrant color, lush summer evenings, or the peaceful quiet of winter, there’s a time of year that will make your day feel just right.
• Spring (April–May) – The park feels alive with rushing waterfalls, fresh greenery, and meadows full of wildflowers. It’s a season of new beginnings, which feels extra fitting for a wedding day.
• Summer (June–August) – Everything is lush and green, with warm evenings that are perfect for stargazing after your vows.
• Fall (late September–mid October) – Autumn is a showstopper , with fiery foliage, crisp mountain air, and dreamy golden light.
• Winter (November–March) – Quiet trails and maybe a dusting of snow make for a peaceful and intimate day.
If you want the softest light and the most privacy, a sunrise ceremony is the way to go. Sunsets are equally as beautiful but may be a bit busier.
How to Be Prepared.
The trails are wild and untamed, which is part of what makes it amazing, But that also means being ready for whatever the day brings.
A little preparation ensures you can stay comfortable and wrapped up in the moment with your partner.
• Wear the right shoes: Choose comfortable hiking boots or sturdy shoes with good grip so you can wander rocky terrain hand-in-hand without worry.
• Pack layers: Mountain weather can shift quickly. Wearing leggings under your dress, a sweater or light jacket will keep you warm when the air turns crisp, even in summer.
• Stay fueled + hydrated: Bring water and a few favorite snacks. Some trail mix, fruit, or a chocolate bar will keep your energy up.
• Protect Yourself : Don’t forget sunblock, sunglasses + bug spray.
• Bring a small backpack: Tuck away your layers, snacks, water, and personal items.
• Extras: In cooler months, bring hand warmers or a blanket for cozy portraits
*Important Note: Cell service is spotty (or nonexistent) in many parts of the park, so be sure everyone in your group (if you’re having guests) knows the meeting points and timeline before the day begins.
Respecting the Park: Leave No Trace
the land that makes it possible.
This area is protected wilderness, and part of honoring its beauty means following Leave No Trace principles. These guidelines ensure that couples like you can enjoy the park for generations to come.
I am a Leave No Trace Aware Photographer. I’m committed to protecting the trails, overlooks, and wildlife while still creating stunning, meaningful images. That means we’ll stick to designated paths, avoid disturbing plants or wildlife, and choose florals that are safe for the environment. Even something as small as a silk flower petal or a piece of confetti can harm the ecosystem here, so every detail of your day matters.
I also encourage you to choose vendors who share this same respect for the outdoors. Working with a team that understands the guidelines ensures that your day leaves nothing behind but happy memories.
Quick Leave No Trace Checklist for Your Elopement:
• Stay on designated trails and overlooks to protect fragile plant life.
• Choose eco-friendly florals (no invasive species, no fake petals).
• Skip confetti, rice, or glitter—opt for alternatives like bubbles or ribbon wands.
• Pack out everything you bring in.
• Respect wildlife by keeping a safe distance and not feeding animals.
